How can I keep my kids safe in the swimming pool?

One of the main reasons many pool owners have a pool is for their children to enjoy it. However, there are precautions when it comes to having children in the pool, especially if they are very young. Here are some ways to keep kids safe in the swimming pool.

Constant Vigilance

A responsible adult needs to keep their eye on a young child in the pool at all times. Even a few seconds of inattention can be the difference between a fun time at the pool and a tragedy. An adult should be in the pool with a baby or toddler and should always be close enough to touch them.

Life Jackets

Life jackets (or personal flotation devices or PFDs) give parents an extra layer of protection against accidental drowning. Make sure that the life jacket you use is a quality one. If your child is an infant or toddler, Type II jackets have head and neck support and will hold a young child’s head out of the water even if they have poor body control. The only negative is that they tend to be bulky, but safety comes first.

Alarms

You can install (and sometimes it is required by law) to install an alarm on your door or gate entering a yard with a pool. This will of course alert an adult if this door opens. There are many other types of alarms that you can get as well. You can get an alarm to put on a child’s wrist to alert an adult if a child goes into the pool. As soon as it gets wet, the alarm will sound. There are also alarms that you can put in or on a pool coping that will sound if it hears a splash from an animal or child. This has also become a new Law as of January 2018!

Swimming Lessons

It should go without saying that once your child is old enough, they should have swimming lessons. They more educated they are about swimming, the less problems you will have and the more secure you will feel with kids in your yard, even if you are with them.
