What does it take to keep my swimming pool water clean?

One of the jobs of the pool owner is to make sure that their water both looks clean and is clean. Keeping a pool clean takes some work, but it is worth it! After all, nobody likes a green pool!

Chlorine and pH

Chlorine and the pH are the main factors that keep pool water clean. Chlorine has a strong oxidizing agent and it is unbeatable for destroying bacteria and other pathogens in pool water.

The pH measures how acidic or alkaline the water is. The pH of the pool should be just a bit alkaline or about 7.5. If your water is too alkaline, it will lower the effectiveness of chlorine. If the pH of the water is elevated, the more chlorine the pool owner will have to add. Homeowners should check chlorine and pH levels with a test kit once a week and should have a professional check the water chemistry at least once a quarter.

Water Level

In order for the pool to be as clean as it can be, the water level should not be too high or too low. If the water level is too low, it can burn out the pump. If it’s too high, the door to the skimmer can’t close properly and do its job of trapping debris inside the skimmer. Checking the right level on a regular basis makes a big difference in keeping your water and pool clean.

Backwash the Filter (D.E.)

The filter pulls dirt and debris from the water. To keep it in good shape, it needs to be backwashed when the water starts looking cloudy. Backwashing means that the water is forced out of the filter in the direction opposite its normal flow. If the pool owner doesn’t want to wait until the water is looking murky, they should check the pressure gauge. If the pressure is between 5 and 7 pounds per square inch above what is normal for the pool, the filter needs to be backwashed.

Other Tips

Other areas to keep in mind when keeping your pool clean is to clean our your skimmer about once a week. The pool owner can find the access panel on the pool deck. Simply open it up, take out the basket, and throw the debris in the trash. The pool owner should also make a habit of manually skimming the pool to remove leaves, twigs, dead bugs and other things that may fall into your pool of the course of a day.
