You already know the value of what a pool brings to your home, but with so many different companies out there, how do you watch out for contractor red flags? In order to make sure you are choosing the right company, take a look at the following tips to help you decide on who to trust to build the pool and yard of your dreams.

Licensing

Make sure that Contractors State License Board (CSLB) is their legal licensing institution. The CSLB number is legally required to be everywhere, including business cards, on the vehicles, the yard signs, advertising and any literature about the company.

Insurance

It is essential that the company you use has workers compensation for all of their employees, including their sales staff. Companies are legally required to have it for all of their workers. You do not want to be held liable if something happens on the job.

Liability

Do you know if the company you are considering has general liability insurance? If the pool company you use with is sued, this insurance helps protects them from legal fees, settlement costs, and damages. While this is not required by law, it is required that the pool builder disclose whether or not they have it. When a construction company has this insurance, it is a sign of reputable company.

Longevity

You want to work with a company that has been around for many years and has experience building a lot of pools. This means they will have satisfied customers and the necessary expertise to build you the pool you want without problems. In addition, find out how long the salesman for that company has been in the business and ask if they have a Home Improvement Salesperson (HIS) license as this is required law.

Expertise

With such a big investment, you want to make sure the project is being run by the most qualified person and team. Make sure that the company plans to have a superintendent (and not the salesperson) in charge.

Physical Location

Make sure the company you are considering is not in a garage or a home office. They should have a business address and showroom where you can pick the materials in which to choose from that will ultimately go in your pool.

Reviews & References

Nowadays there is no shortage of places to find a review of a company. Just do a Google search and type in the pool company’s name and learn what previous customers have said. Before signing the dotted line, research how happy their previous customers are on the quality of work. In addition, ask for a reference list and go look at previous jobs in person. A good company will offer up this information up front.

Solid Contract

The contract should have every single detail listed and should be at least three pages in length. If the company does not have a detailed contract with all the necessary details from the plan, it could mean increases in the total cost of the project with endless added fees. Everything on this contract should be on the plans as this is the legal document to state what will be built.
